Benbrook, Texas is a small town located in the midwest of the United States. It is known for its historical landmarks such as Benbrook Dam and Benbrook Plantation. The community was founded in 1892 by settlers from Illinois. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. The name "Benbrook" comes from the Shawnee word ben-creek which means "a place where there is water." The original settlers were farmers who arrived in 1892 with irrigation equipment to improve their land. They named their new town after General James Kountze, an American general who had led cavalry raids against Native Americans during the Mexican-American War. One of the most famous residents of Benbrook was General George Armstrong Custer, who fought on both sides of the war and died in 1890 while commanding a cavalry unit near Apache Pass. His remains are interred at Benbrook National Cemetery. Other prominent natives include Congressman Tom Latham (D), Dr. Laura Berman (D), and Rick Perry (R).

Benbrook is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,246 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by J.D. Benbrook and his brother Amos Benbrook. Benbrook is named for Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia. The original settlers were farmers who had to cross the Brazos River to get to their land from nearby Houston. In 1881, J.D. Benbrook and his brother Amos bought 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land east of present-day McLennan County seat Lufkin on the Brazos River from John Denton and his family for $5 per acre ($/ha). They began farming the land which they named "Benbrook." By 1905, when the first post office was established in Benbrook, there were only 15 residents living hereabouts; today there are over 350 people living there including descendants of those early settlers! In 1907, construction began on what would become one of the largest commercial mills in Texas – the First National Bank & Trust Company Mill – now part of Rice University’s Harris School of Business Administration (HSA). The mill became operational in 1909 and produced flour for local restaurants and markets as well as export to Europe and Mexico until it closed its doors in 1978 after more than 40 years! Today remnants of this once thriving business can still be seen within walking distance of downtown Benbrook! During World War II, many local men served as soldiers or Marines; some made it all the way home with distinction! Many residents also took up agriculture during that time period; today much produce comes from these lands!. One such resident, Willis “Walt” Whitehead Sr., operated a small farm near downtown while also working at Lufkin-based Gulf Oil Corporation as an oil field engineer before he retired in 2006 with over 50 years experience solidifying McLennan County’s agricultural heritage! In recent timesben Brook has seen some major changes within its borders: 1) The opening of Interstate 10 accentuated growth throughout much eastern McLennan County which led to many new businesses moving into town center; several examples include Lone Star Fitness (+10% since 2001), Old Navy (+20%), Live Oak Casino (+25%) – all resulting in an overall increase in jobs/income available within benBrook boundaries . 2) Other big investments have been made by Mayor Pro Tem Darrell York (elected November 3rd 2011) towards improving benBrook infrastructure such as expanding sidewalks & bike paths along Center Street (& adjoining streets), resurfacing roads outside town limits (& creating a Trails program ), bringing back streetlights (& adding LED lighting ), installation of a new water system (!), installation of new heating systems (!), expansion plans are underway for both grocery stores (.50% Increase since 2009!),[and] coffee shop !
