The Benbrook Coast Guard Station was established in 1928. The first coast guard unit was stationed at the present station and duties included patrolling the Texas coast. In 1951, a new Coast Guard Station was built on the same site. It featured a tower, harbor and boat slips. The current station is located on FM 3471 about 2 miles east of town. Today, the Coast Guard provides coastal security and search and rescue services as well as providing education to local children about maritime safety. As part of its mission, the Coast Guard also conducts river patrols to prevent piracy and smuggling along the Corpus Christi River corridor. In addition, it offers annual youth] summer sailing program.]] In 1927, when Benbrook’s first coast guard unit was activated, it consisted of two patrol boats and one launch used by members of the Texas State Police Department for surveillance purposes along the Texas coastline. In 1951, when a new Coast Guard Station was built on land adjacent to town limits, all state police functions were transferred to that facility including law enforcement patrols along shoreline properties; harbor patrols; and boat operations including both launches and patrol boats used by state troopers forSearch & Rescue missions during hurricanes or floods]. By 1970 however all state police functions had been transferred back to Benbrook with only marine Patrol Operations remaining which are currently conducted using three vessels- oneLaunch (Harbor Patrol Vessel)and two craft (Patrol Boat/ Yacht) from State Marina in downtown Benbrook]]. This left only law enforcement related activities performed from Headquarters Team at our current station ]], which includes conducting searches for missing persons or confiscated property]. According to Captain Donny Greenough who has been with us since 1978 our Current Law Enforcement Role focuses primarily on Search And Rescue Missions following events such as Hurricanes Harvey or Irma]], these have become more common due to recent flooding events especially near Corpus Christi.]] At present we operate 3 vessels- one Launch ( Harbour Patrol Vessel),and two Craft(Patrol Boat/Yacht) from State Marina in downtown Benbrook - making us America’s largest Coastal Guardsman Unit!
