The first coffee house in Belton was opened in 1922 by two men who were part of the community's early agricultural economy. Coffee became an important part of local society and culture, and Belton residents continue to enjoy a wide variety of coffee options today. The history of small batch coffee begins with James Fenton, who immigrated to America from Scotland in 1859. Fenton began his career as a grocer in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and later moved to Reading, Pennsylvania where he opened a grocery store. In 1876, Fenton founded the first small-batch brewing company in America when he purchased land at 4609 E Side Street in Reading, Pennsylvania and began producing traditional Scottish black coffees. Fenton's legacy continues through his son James Fenton Jr., who also founded the company. In 1984, James Sr.'s grandson John Mladenovic joined the family business as president and CEO. The current patriarch of the business is John Mladenovic II, who has led the company since its inception in 2002. Today’s Belton Coffee Company produces over one hundred different varieties of roasted beans from three roasting plants located within ten miles of town.

Belton was founded in 1873 by a man named James Belton and his wife, Martha. The city was named for the Battle of Belmont, which took place on November 3, 1847. The town's first settler was George Wilkinson. In 1880, the population of Belton reached 10,000 people. By 1920, the population had grown to 25,000 people. In 1940, theBelton Municipal Airport opened and served as the town's main airport until it closed in 1974. During World War II, Belton played an important role in the war effort as it housed a military airfield used by American bombers and fighter planes. After the war ended, Belton experienced significant economic growth thanks to its status as a logistics center for Midwestern agriculture. The city became one of Texas' fastest-growing cities and saw its population reach 100,000 people by 1990. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s there were several serious problems with Belton's growing economy that caused it to experience significant decline over time. One such problem was that many businesses in Belton were Non-profit organizations which did not have to report their income or pay taxes like other businesses do. This led toinstability within the city government which eventually led to its downfall beginning in 2006 when Mayor John Hagerty resigned after being accused of using public money for personal expenses including travel costs related to a failed business venture he had started prior to his appointment as mayor In 2007 City Councilwoman Janice Atwood Heck made headlines when she proposed legalizing marijuana within city limits should it be legalized statewide due to concerns about how local law enforcement would handle drug crimes if pot were legalized statewide
