Belton, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metro area. The Air Force Base and its adjacent communities are among Belton's most distinguishable features. In 1941, when World War II began, the United States Air Forces activated an airfield in nearby Webb County to provide support for operations against Japan. This airfield became known as Belton Army Air Field (now Belton Air Force Base). One major change that took place in nearby Houston was when oil began to flow through the area and production increased which led to more people moving into Belton as it became an economic center for oilfields around Houston.
