The military has been in Beeville, Texas for over a century. The first Fort Worth Battalion of the Texas Rangers was organized on December 17th, 1881 and the city’s first soldier, Corporal John Hogg, was killed in action on February 16th of that year. The fortifications at Beeville were completed in 1903 and are still used to this day as part of the Texas Army National Guard. On November 5th, 1942 Major General James M. Gavin announced the U.S.A.'sinvasion of Japan; Beeville became an active garrison town soon after. During World War II, Beeville played an important role as a troop depot and garrison town for the Japanese forces occupying Texas during the war. In 1946-1947 Beeville hosted United States Air Force Headquarters stationed at Fairpark Air Force Base which later became Travis Air Force Base. It also served as home to various units of theTexas Rangers until they were disbanded in 1982 when all ranger units were transferred to neighboring Oklahoma City area agencies under then Governor Rick Perry's Order No 1 known as "Operation Phoenix". Since World War II there have been many deployments by both our military and their allies throughout Southwest Asia and North Africa; however, no major deployment has taken place here within the last fifty years or so!
