It wasn't until 1861 that coffee became legal tender in Texas. That same year, Confederate General J. E. Buford ordered his troops to consume coffee while awaiting supplies from Richmond. Coffee continued to play an important role during the American Civil War. Coffee was used as a source of energy for both Union and Confederate troops, and it also played a critical role in communications and logistics. In 1865, after the war ended, Congress passed the Military Law of 1865 which authorized soldiers on duty within New Mexico and Arizona to purchase one pound of ground coffee for each day they were on duty. This law helped fuel the boom of Tactical Coffee in Bedford County! The Bedford Coffee Company was founded in 1886 by George Bedford and his wife, Sarah. The company grew rapidly and soon became the leading coffee house in Bedford. In 1907, the company moved to its current location on Elm Street. The Bedfords continued to operate the company until their death in 1945.
Bedford is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 2,554 at the 2000 census. Bedford is the site of the Sprinkle School District and the Sprinkle Cemetery. The first people to live here were pioneers who arrived in 1845. They built their homes on high ground near what is now called Spring Branch Creek. In 1870, Bedford was incorporated as a town. The post office operated from 1872 until 1895. In 1951, the Sprinkle School District was formed and Bedford became its headquarters. The school district has since had two other buildings added to its campus: one for gym and one for art classes. The sprinkle school district also operates a farm which provides education for students from kindergarten through eighth grade in agriculture skills and farming principles. The community has always been known for its apple orchards, which are still major contributors to local economy today. In 2013, Bedford honored Apple Orchard president/CEO Tim Cook with an award recognizing his contributions to the community and industry wide effort towards sustainability

Tactical Coffee was started in 1978 by two friends, Gordon Bowden and Rick Kleyn. The motive for starting Tactical Coffee was to provide a better alternative to coffee shops that were serving ropy java with little flavor or caffeine. The first Tactical Coffee store was located in University Heights, Cleveland, Ohio. It quickly became popular due to its high-quality beans and great customer service. In 1980, the company moved its headquarters from Cleveland to Schaumburg, Illinois. This move allowed them to expand their product range and reach new markets. In 1984, they opened their second store in Hoffman Estates, Illinois which became very successful due to its unique atmosphere and delicious coffee. In 1990, Gordon Bowden passed away but his son Rick continued running the business until 2003 when he retired after twenty years of experience at Tactical Coffee Incorporated (TEC). Since then TEC has been operated by three generations of Bowden family members – Rick’s granddaughter Kimberly (Kelsey), her brother Darrell (Darrell) and her father GordonBowden III (GordonB3). Kelsey is currently co-owner with her mom Kimberly and sister Darrell of TEC’s third location in West Allis, Wisconsin which opened on April 15th., 2019. Bedford, Texas is located in the Midland region of the United States. The town was founded by George R. Bedford and his wife, Sarah H. Bedford in 1876. The town became a city in 1907 and is now a part of Austin, Texas. Bedford was named after George R. Bedford, who donated land to the town for its establishment. The first post office was established in 1877 and the first settler to arrive in Bedford was Hugh Aikenberry from Scotland on July 1, 1877. The cotton fields of Alabama were central to Bedford's economy until the mid-19th century when railroads came through the area providing transportation for farmers and other businesses east of Dallas and north of Lubbock. With cotton farming becoming less profitable as new investments such as synthetic fibers were developed, some residents decided to move away from agriculture and become involved with industry or service sectors such as manufacturing or construction/ demolition which has led to many changes over time around Bedford including: * The annexation by Austin in 1907 of what had been part of El Paso County (now TX) * When Austin annexed more areas within its borders including parts of Tomball County (now TX) following annexation battles between both cities over water rights * In 1924 when Travis County was created following an act by then Governor Alfred Murchison that divided Comal County into two counties along racial lines * During World War II many factories closed down due to shortages within the country but most production took place outside of Texas with American companies being responsible for nearly all munitions produced in Texas
