Bedford is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,802 at the 2010 census. Bedford is located in the central part of the county and is bordered to the north by Edinburg and to the south by San Angelo. Bedford was founded in 1849 as a small settlement on the Red River near present-day Lubbock. The first post office was established in 1850, and Bedford became a city in 1912. In 1932, Bedford merged with nearby Lubbock to form one municipality. The original settlers were Englishmen who had come to this area for land speculation during the gold rush of 1848-49. They named their community after John Bede Dunham, an American merchant who had been instrumental in helping them purchase some property along the Red River from Native Americans. Bedford quickly developed into a agricultural center due to its rich soil and ample water resources. By 1890, Bedford had become one of Midland County's leading industrial cities with a commercial district that included seven banks and thirty-six businesses. Manufacturing industries continued to be important throughout most of the 20th century; however, they have since declined as production moved offshore or away from heavy manufacturing to more light-weight products such as textiles and plastics. However, during difficult times for midwestern agriculture during World War II (1941-1945), Bedford produced over 2 million pounds of munitions using local mills Output increased again following generous government subsidies beginning in 1953 In recent decades there has been significant growth within both retail commerce and professional services sectors across all modes including health care through managed care organizations (HMOs) etc., although large service companies continue to dominate much of traditional manufacturing occupations such as truckers/drivers/railroad engineers etc.; many jobs which are not currently threatened by automation but could become so if new technology advances

In 1803, the 1st Infantry Regiment was formed in Massachusetts and served as part of Grant’s army during the Mexican-American War. In 1861, when Confederate States of America was founded, the 1st Infantry Regiment became part of the Confederate Army and fought against Union forces at Antietam and Gettysburg. During World War II, the National Guard played an important role both before and after Pearl Harbor. They mobilized in 1941 to help fight against Nazi Germany but also responded to various protests and events around the country including sit-ins at military installations and picketing military recruiting rallies. After war ended, many Guardsmen remained service members through post-war periods such as Operation Varsity (1949), which drew more than 450 recruits from all over the United States to participate in a two week training program at Fort Benning Georgia; Men Without Arms (1955); counterintelligence operations during the Cold War;and deployments to Korea (1958) and Vietnam (1965). There are currently over 158 thousand men serving with our National Guard across fifty states plus D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam – making it one ofAmerica’s largest reserve armies!
