Bedford, Texas is home to one of the most active and diverse military detachments in the area. The Bedford Army Reserve unit has been with the town since its incorporation in 1881. It was during this time that the army began deploying gift history to local residents as a way ofThanking them for their support during war time. Today, gifts from the military are still given regularly and through special events such as Christmas Gifts for Soldiers Day. The Bedford Army Reserve unit has a rich history dating back to 1881 when troops were deployed to help protect Fort Worth during the American Civil War. After cessation of hostilities, many soldiers returned home and took up residence in Bedford thanks to generous donations by citizens. The unit continued being stationed in Bedford until World War II when it moved permanently to Fort Worth. Since then, there have been numerous deployments both within and outside of Texas due to various conflicts including Operation Iraqi Freedom, Hurricane Katrina, and Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan (Operation Inherent Resolve). Some current members of the battalion include service members from Kuwait, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Qatar, Bahrain, Omani Shia Muslims serving in Iraq & Syria as well as Marines from Marine Corps Expeditionary Unit 647th Naval Infantry Regiment who will be sent into Iraq later this year. Each deployment provides unique opportunities for interaction between different branches of our military and helps keep our community engaged on a global stage!

The Bedford Volunteer Infantry Volunteers, also known as the Bedford Volunteer Cavalry or simply the Bedford Troops, was a volunteer infantry regiment of the Union army during the American Civil War. The unit was organized on December 12, 1861 in Bedford, Texas with three companies. The regiment fought in the Battle of Corinth on April 6, 1862 and at Lookout Mountain on May 14, 1862. It then fought at Chickamauga on September 18-19 and October 15-16. On January 1, 1863 it was disbanded due to lack of volunteers.
Bedford is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,748 at the 2010 census. Bedford is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Bedford were traders from Spain and Mexico who crossed the Rio Grande in 1824. The first permanent residents were Mexican immigrants who arrived in 1846. Englishman John Bedford settled here in 1854 and began to grow cotton. He named his farm Bedford after his birthplace,Bedford-in-the-Middlesex, England. In 1860, American Civil War veteran General George Bancroft founded the Baylor University campus here where he taught for many years until his death in 1893. In 1865, local citizens donated land for a courthouse and jail which served as the nucleus of the present community hall complex that stands today on Elm Street near Interstate 35W (now Dallas Parkway). In 1870, Italian immigrants established a vineyard on what is now Elm Street; this was followed by other early commercial activities such as grain storage and cattle herding before reaching their current level of activity with truckloads of vegetables arriving daily beginning in 1916 when beds were established along I-635 east of town limits. A post office was organized at Bedford in 1901; it continued operation until 1975 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service within Webb County. In 1915 Edwin Ladd opened the first successful general store west of San Antonio when he moved from Waco to open an outpost at what is now southbound I-35E between US 75 and FM 1960 (now State Highway 59).
