The town grew around a cotton gin and mill that were built by the Bedford Company between 1865 and 1865. The company operated the gin until 1892 when it went out of business. In 1903, the town became a part of Richardson County after it was approved by the Texas Legislature. The county seat at that time was Commerce City.
