In 1941, the United States entered World War II and Beaumont became one of the most important military sites in the war. The Beaumont National Guard was activated on November 8th, 1941 and served as part of the Army Ground Forces. On December 1st, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9106 which called for an increase in the number of National Guardsmen across America. Between 1942 and 1945, Beaumont saw a significant increase in defense activity as the country faced various threats from Axis powers Europe and Asia. This increased demand for manpower led to numerous promotions for members of the National Guard including commando operations during Operation Neptune’s Spear (1946), support for Operation Overlord (1944), participation in combat during Stalingrad (1948) and Korea (1950). In 1949, Beaumont Mayor Cletus Hargrave formed a municipal committee to study ways to improve relations between government agencies and local businesses. Their report recommended that all businesses located within 1/2 mile of City Hall should become contributors to Local Defense Programs or LDPs which would provide financial assistance to local emergency organizations such as fire departments, police forces and ambulance services while also providing marketing opportunities to participating businesses. The first LDP program was established in 1951 with $10 million available from private donations. Over time there have been several revisions to LDP programs which have helped contribute towardsBeaumont's current national guard gift history: - In 1969, LDP funding was increased from $25 million per year to $50 million per year; - In 1984, Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards announced plans to make all residents aged eighteen or older eligible for membership in the National Guard; - In 1990 changes were made which allowed registered citizens who resided outside Louisiana but had at least two years continuous service with their unit(s) or organization(s) associated with it since September 4th 1959 – prior thereto they were required only to reside within fifty miles of their unit or organization’s headquarters; - On October 12th 1997 changes were made effective retroactive thereto affecting counties adjacent thereto that had not yet ratified changes effected by Lieutenant Governor David Treen on February 22nd 1997; - On November 15th 2001 new legislation changed eligibility requirements once again effective retroactively effecting those portions of neighboring counties adjacent thereto that had not yet ratified tweaks previously passed by LieutenantGovernor Aiden Flemmi on September 25th 2000

The Beaumont National Guard's history in the town goes back to 1917. The Guard was organized on December 12, 1917 and took its first steps as a battalion of the Texas Army National Guard. The unit was redesignated as the 109th Infantry Battalion on February 15, 1918 and served with distinction during World War I. In response to the Spanish-American War, the 109th Infantry Battalion was mobilized on April 26, 1915 and served with distinction until September 1914 when they were mustered out of service. After leaving military service, the battalion returned home and reorganized under command of Major General John T. Dempsey who activated it at Beaumont Municipal Airport on November 1, 1921. In 1924, the battalion became an infantry brigade composed of two battalions which were reorganized into companies in 1936 before being reorganized again in 1941 as a rifle brigade under Lieutenant Colonel James Hatton Dyer Jr.. This brigade participated in World War II where it fought in Europe and Asia from June 1942 until September 1945. From 1946 to 1951 it operated within Headquarters Fifth United States Army Group (HAG) headquartered at Fort Sam Houston before being disbanded on October 1, 1951 without ever reaching combat duty.

It is located on a large bend in the Gulf of Mexico and its ZIP code is 76615. The Beaumont area has been inhabited by Native Americans since pre-historic times, and it was first settled by Europeans in 1836 as part of the Mexican–American War effort to control Mexico's southern border. The cotton gin industry began to grow here in the early 1800s, and Texaco became one of its largest employers. By 2000, however, Beaumont had lost most of its economic heyday due to pollution from oil refineries and other industrial activity in nearby Houston. In 1944, after more than 20 years_(of_service) with Company D (1st Battalion), 9th Marines (Attached Training Unit), Hitchcock received orders from Marine Commandant Commodore Cdr John Wainwright ordering him commanding officer's flagbearer at ceremonies honoring Japanese Americans who had served during World War II (Hitchcock). During these ceremonies he also served as acting battalion commander while Company D's commanding officer Lt Col Richard Gentryserved concurrently with Hitchcock on submarines USS Missouri(LST-5)and USS San Francisco(LST-8) respectively!
