Beaumont is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 116,827 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th largest city in Texas and the 12th largest city in the US. Beaumont is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) east of Corpus Christi and 30 miles (48 km) north of Lubbock. The area now known as Beaumont was first settled by people from Canada in 1839. The town grew up around an old mission called San Jacinto de Padua, which had been founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1821. In 1868, it became the county seat for Wise County. In 1865, General Sam Houston purchased land at what is now downtown Beaumont from Manuel Feliciano for $200 per acre ($10 million current value). Houston named his new plantation Donelson House after his brother-in-law Donelson, a Scotsman who had played a major role in helping to get Texas independence from Mexico. At first, Houston used only part of this land - mainly within present-day Downtown Beaumont - for farming purposes and lived there with his family until he moved into his presidential palace near Austin in 1893. During World War II, Beaumont served as one of four military airfields used bythe United States Forces Europe (USFET). In 1943–1945 Beaumont was home to over 100000 soldiers and civilians who participated in Army Air Forces operations against Nazi Germany and Italy during World War II; more than any other American city or town. Beaumont is a city in and the county seat of Beaumont County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of Houston and 80 miles (130 km) south-southwest of Dallas. The city was founded by John Beaumont in 1836 as a trading post on the Sabine River near present-day Port Arthur. In 1849, Beaumont became an independent municipality and was renamed after General Sam Houston. AfterHouston's death in1877, Beaumont reverted to its original name; however, it has since been commonly called "the City of Houston" due to its location within that city's boundaries. In 1915, Beaumont annexed portions of Harris County to form a new city government separate from Houston. The annexation caused much public opposition because many residents felt they had been duped into joiningHouston without their consent or knowledge. In 1935, Houston annexed most of what remained of Beaumont County including the town of Tomball into its jurisdiction while allowing Tomball to maintain its own government and political representation through special elections held that year. On January 1, 1961, parts of Tomball were absorbed into neighboring Clear Lake Village so that all residents in both villages were integrated into one city government for the first time ever in Texas history
