Beaumont is a city in Texas, United States. It is the seat of Beaumont County and the largest city in East Texas. The population was 174,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Beaumont began as a trading post on an old Indian-occupied site called Baum’s Fort on November 5, 1814 by General Sam Houston and his forces during the War for Independence. The first Anglo-American settlement in present-day Beaumont was founded by Captain John Dickey and others from Fannin County on January 6, 1827. In 1836, Antonio López de Santa Anna led a Mexican army into Utopia Parish to capture American prisoner William Henry Harrison (the 44th President of the United States). A group of Texas Rangers led by John Wesley Smith attacked Santa Anna's army while he was besieging Utopia; they were successful in repelling him and driving him back across the Rio Grande into Mexico City. As a result of this victory over Mexico, Texas became an independent republic under Texan leadership. On July 24, 1861, when Confederate soldiers burned down Union munitions depot at Richardson Mill (now Richland Mills), local citizens responded with spontaneous violence against Confederate troops throughout central TX following news reports that Richmond had ordered such attacks—the first organized public resistance to secessionist sentiment in Texas since before independence! In retaliation for these actions—and also knowing that its own citizens would not passively stand idly by while their homes were destroyed—Union military forces burned down two towns in East Texas within days: Beaumont on October 16 and Marshalltown on October 20. This series of retaliatory raids effectively ended Reconstruction in TX before it could even start! A number of important events followed after Richardson Mill: On December 13, 1861 Governor James Kenedy issued Order No 1 ordering all law enforcement officers throughout TX to assistance with suppressing any slave uprising or insurrection taking place “in any part thereof”; four days later martial law was proclaimed effective statewide; abolitionists arrested many landowners who remained loyal to slavery; about 2/3rds of Texans over age 25 decided to secede from the Confederacy within months... approximately 620 people died as a direct result from Confederate bombings and arson during those three weeks... state troopers engaged in wholesale rape and plundering across county lines during this time period as well! The Battle of San Jacinto occurred near Beaumont only one month later (April 23) when Federal Forces defending Austin against Confederate siege forced bitter hand-to-hand combat along Interstate 10 near FM 1960 between Union General Price and Confederate Colonel Findlater outside Beaumont which resulted in more than 50 fatalities including Generals Price himself & Findlater Texas Gov Jerry Brown declared May 30th "National Republic Day" in honor of both Price & Findlater slain here at San Jacinto Battlefield

Beaumont is a city in Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Waller County. The population was 3,912 at the 2010 census. Beaumont was named for General James Wilkinson Beauregard, who fought in the American Civil War and served as Governor of Texas from 1881 to 1887. The first permanent settler in what is now Beaumont was John Fitzpatrick, who arrived in 1797. By 1800, there were around 100 settlers living in what is now downtown Beaumont. In 1836, Colonel James Hogg founded Beaverdam Creek Station on the present site of downtown Beaumont and began to sell land east of town to farmers and others for cattle and other purposes. He also built a small log cabin near today's Elm Street NW and Brazos River NE which remains standing as a historic landmark today. In 1865, when Waller County was created from portions of Dallas County, BeaumONT became its county seat. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in downtown BeaumONT in 1876-77 by JF Gunnarson & Son Construction Co.. The building still stands (although it has been renovated several times) and serves as the current courthouse complex. In 1920 Downtown BeaumONT had an estimated population of 100 people; during prohibition it went up to over 200 people due largely to bootlegging activity that took place along Main Street between Houston Avenue NW and 8th Street NW while Prohibition continued into 1923 In 1951 Downtown BeaumONT's population peaked at 1,500 with 150 businesses located therein; however by 1955 it had decreased to 350 people due largely to suburbanization within Waller County . On November 2nd 1954 local newspapers across the state experienced serious cyberattacks that crippled many local papers including those serving Downtown Austin TX (one such paper remained operational). These attacks are generally considered to be one of the earliest successful cyber attacks against large U.S metropolitan areas
