In 1840 Baytown became part of Galveston County when it was organized from portions of Houston County. At its peak it had a population of around 4500 people but declined rapidly due to Indian Removal (the forced displacement of Native Americans in north Texas) and economic competition from larger towns such as Houston or Galveston which grew up around port facilities on Buffalo Bayou or along the Gulf Coast. By 1850 there were only about fifty people living in Baytown proper while others lived scattered around rural Galveston Parish withinHouston County or near San Antonio de Bexar Mission Creek where most plants for food production were located at this time including rice fields along with cattle ranches operated by Spanish colonists until after World War II when these operations were transferred to American farmers following D-Day coastal landings January 6th 1944 as well as later Operation Market Garden Normandy Liberation Operation December 16th 1944 .
