Bay City, Texas is a small city located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Midland County. Bay City was founded on October 15, 1847 by Capt. John C. Bayless and his band of soldiers from Fort Clark during the Mexican-American War. It became a part of the United States after Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Red River and its access to shipping lanes that made it an important commercial center for agriculture and transportation. The town proper was only 1 square mile (3 acres) when it first organized in 1851, but it grew rapidly because of its location and access to resources such as lumber, fishing, irrigated agriculture and natural gas reserves.
