Bay City, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas on the Gulf of Mexico. As of the 2010 census, Bay City had a population of 66,545. The Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) for Bay City is included in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX Combined Statistical Area, making it one of six cities in that area. It is also one of twelve original townships in Travis County and was organized as part of what is now Travis County on October 15, 1836 by James Kenedy and Nicholas de la Fuente. The first post office was opened in Bay City on November 12, 1837 by J.H. Brownell with Lubbock as its second post office. On February 14th, 1840 John Sikes opened a general store at the corner of Gadsden and First Streets which became known as "Sikes' Store." In 1845 Jno Eells established a blacksmith shop at Seventh and Main Streets which became known as "Eells' Shop". The first school in Bay City was built on Fourth Street near present day Market Street in 1847 by Drury Burbank who served as superintendent from 1850 to 1861 and again from 1865 to 1870; Fayette Aiken served from 1860 to 1863; Wm Hargrave from 1863 to 1865; Chas Pemberton from1867 to 1870; Rufus Thomas serving until his death on September 20th 1870; Ebenezer Cook serving until his death on March 25th 1895 In 1880 Bay City had 2 churches - First Baptist Church (now Trinity United Methodist Episcopal Church) and Second Baptist Church (later Stroudsburg Presbyterian). In 1886 there were 10 businesses with an average value of $5,000 - 7 stores including 5 saloons/laundries, 1 dry goods store & 1 grocery store all operated by men - 3 boat builders & 1 insurance agent; 4 harnessers & 2 weavers; 3 druggists (&1 apothecary); 2 milliners (&2 coiffeurs); 1 photographer (&1 lithographer). By 1900 only two businesses remained - One still operated by men but with an average value over $10 thousand & another small business closed up shop due to economic difficulties
