In Bay City, Texas, the United States Air Force has been providing service to the community since World War II. The first European to encounter what is now Bay City was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 when he sailed up the San Antonio River and landed on its shores on Santa Anna Island. In 1824 John Fenton discovered and named it after Captain George Baynham of HMS Beagle who had explored California in 1785-89 and then visited San Antonio Island in 1802-03 while exploring northwest Texas for what became Mexico. On November 9, 1827 Jameson Vail founded a landing place for traders called Fenton Landing which had been named by him for Commodore George Baynham whose ship HMS Dolphin had made an unsuccessful attempt to land at that point two years earlier on July 12th, 1826 aboard USS Constitution under command of Commodore David Dixon Porter with Lieutenant Thomas Peebles as pilot boatswain's mate. In 1830 Hernando de Soto discovered Tejas Island while exploring northwest Texas and named it after his brother Spain's Admiral Don Fernando de la Torre y Martinez who had led an expedition to explore Texcoco (Chihuahua) in early 1698 during Spanish colonization of this region including Santa Anna and Taos Isthmus before returning to Spain in 1699 via Coahuila (New Mexico). The island was later claimed by both Mexico (1836) and United States (1846).
