The Balch Springs Naval air station was chartered on October 3, 1915 and became an active naval aviation center during World War I. The squadron that operated from the naval air station was called detachment #1 and its first aircraft were Curtiss pushers. The first ship to come to Balch Springs was USS "Pine Bluff" which arrived on November 5, 1915. USS "Pine Bluff" served as a training vessel for the squadron until 1916 when she transferred to the Navy Department's fleet at San Diego, California. USS "Pine Bluff" remained in San Diego until 1919 when she returned to duty with Squadron 1 at Balch Springs Naval Air Station. In 1926 Squadron 1 moved again and this time they leased an old destroyer, "Concord". The new ship served in Squadron 1 until 1931 when she decommissioned and was sold for scrap. In 1933 Squadron 1 leased an old battleship, "Tullahoma". The new ship served as a Training Ship for Naval Aviation before being redesignated as a Aircraft Carrier on December 15th of that year. She completed her conversion by February 1934 and then joined Fleet maneuvers off Long Beach California before joining Task Force 16 which struck at Pearl Harbor on December 7th of that year. On January 8th 1945 USS Memphis (CV-15) collided with USS Quincy (CV-27) resulting in both ships sinking within minutes of each other near the entrance to Tokyo Bay! It is said that if it had not been for these two accidents it is likely that Japan would have won World War II! USS Memphis (CV-15) remains one of only two US Ships still afloat after serving in WWII; the other wreck is currently moored offshore in Corpus Christi Texas
