The United States Army was founded on December 14, 1775, in Philadelphia. The first soldiers were volunteers from the town of Balch Springs, Texas. The area was an open ranchland and lacked any natural resources so the army needed to find ways to fund its operations. One way the army used money it earned from taxes was by selling food and ammunition to Native Americans. In 1881, General John C. Frémont announced that the U.S.Army would be divided into two parts – one in California and one in Texas – with Balch Springs as the East Texas Regiment of the Californian Division ofthe Volunteers Corps (ETDCV). On November 25th 1901, General Order No. 128 published by Major-General Pershing called for all volunteer infantry companies present at Fort Worth (now Arlington) on November 24th 1901 to be mustered out within ten days or their muster rolls would be cancelled and they would not receive pay for that day or month. On December 3rd 1901 all battalion commanders received orders ordering them to disband their companies and form new ones under Company Commanders upon arrival at their commands! This change in command caused some confusion among unit leaders who did not know what to do with their units!!! Eventually most battalion commanders disbanded their companies but many retained individual battle files which are still preserved today! On January 1st 1902 a detachment of 150 men under Lieutenant Colonel James Hogg arrived from California and began drilling at Fort Worth barracks while part of Brigade Headquarters Detachment commanded by Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer! These troops were also responsible for garrisoning Mission San Antonio de Alamo until February 8th when they were relieved by elements of Battery Ewing’s Battalion flagship USS Monitor! On April 15th 1902 Captain Alfred Smedley organized a detachment of cavalrymen under Captain Arthur Laddington Forbes from Big Spring east of Dallas as part of Cavalry Brigade Headquarters Detachment commanded by Brigadier General John J Session! That same day Infantry Brigade Headquarters Detachment consisted only of Companies A & B with Companies G & H being detached eastward near Beaumont Passogan Municipal Airport where they camped during May 2nd-4th 1942!! In October 1941 a detachment led by First Lieutenant Wesley Pipes arrived from Tucson Arizona Territory and began drill at Fort Worth barracks while part of Brigade Headquarters Detachment commanded by Major-General MacArthur! After arriving there Private First Class Harry Fenton became troop commander for Company I who had been attached to Company K which was located at Monterrey Mexico City National Palace!! The next year on November 12th 1942 two detachments led by SecondLieutenant Archibald Ferguson arrived from Corpus Christi Texas Territory and continued drill at Fort Worth barracks while part of Brigade Headquarters Detachment commanded by Major-General Stilwell!! After arriving there Private First Class Franklin Daley became troop commander for Company K who had been attached to Company L which was located at El Paso TX Railroad Station !! Balch Springs is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,860 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Balch Springs was founded in 1879 by John W. Balch and his family as a cattle ranch on the east edge of what is now Hidalgo County, near present day McKinney. In 1907, Balch Springs became an incorporated city and still retains its name today. The first settlers in what is now Balch Springs were John W. Balch and his two sons Alvin and George Washington Ballou who arrived in 1879 from Ohio with their families. They established a trading post called "Keen's Spring" about three miles northeast of present day Balch Springs on the old Shanahan Ranch which they acquired from General Stephen Kearny’s army during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Keen's Spring served as a stopping point for travelers seeking to trade goods with local Indians such as the Comanche and Kiowa Indians who lived around that time along the upper Arkansas River Valley west of Dallas. In 1907, when City Council appointed Harry Cone to develop land north of downtown Dallas for developers to build homes there, he recommended thatBalch Springs be annexed intoDallas fearing it would become another bedroom community like Plano or Arlington Heights
