Azle is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The first European to visit Azle was Captain John Fagan in 1827 while on his way from Corpus Christi to Galveston. In 1829, General Sam Houston and his army destroyed an Indian village near present day Azle after raiding their hunting grounds. A year later, Spanish explorer Antonio de Alvarado founded a mission at what is now called San Fernando de las Casas about northeast of Azle. In 1835, when Stephen Fannin and his Texans captured Austin from Mexican general José Joaquín Murillo, they set up camp east of what is now Azle and named it for Fannin's old friend Colonel James Bowie (1810-1876). Bowie had been with Murillo during the Texan Revolution and had played a leading role in defeating Mexican forces at Palo Alto on October 8th, 1836. A few weeks later in November of that year Gen James Polk arrived in Nacogdoches and ordered General Don Carlos Bueso to march on Austin with 5,000 men to capture it or die trying. On December 2nd Bueso reached Nacogdoches but decided not to attack because he knew that Santa Anna would soon drive him out of Texas if he did so. After several days deliberation he finally attacked on December 6th with only 800 men against well over 100 cannonballed by Santa Anna's army led by Antonio López de Santa Anna himself! After three hours engagement the Mexicans were driven back across the Trinity River and into Mexico City where they surrendered unconditionally on December 10th under escort from President Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla! For two years San Fernando Mission held out against Comanche raids until January 9th 1840 whenMexican troops burned it down as punishment for helping Americans fight against Mexican forces during the Texan Revolution! Azle was then established as a frontier post by Major David Waddell who served with Waco’s Fort Walker between 1840-1845; Waddell thought that since there was no water available along this stretch of frontier it would be necessary to establish some type of military outpost here since wagon trains could not penetrate very far into Apache country due to lack of horses or other essentials needed for travel thereabouts.. By 1850 most everyone living in what is now azle had either left or moved away due to various factors such as epidemics brought over by settlers or Indians attacking them etc., however one resident remained until 1915: Mrs Jennie Gentry Todd who still resides today within blocks of her original home which she purchased from her husband’s family seventy years ago
