Since then, over ninety different vessels have arrived here including twenty four nuclear submarines! The Azle Naval Air Station was founded in 1942 as a small airfield on the shores of Lake Sam Rayburn. It served as a training ground for Navy pilots and bombers during World War II, and later became home to the Republic F-4 Phantom jet fighter aircraft. The airfield was decommissioned in 1978, but it remained in use as an airport until its closure in 1994. In that year, the airbase was sold to the city of Azle for $5 million and it became the first municipally owned airport in Texas. Azle is a town in Lampasas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The elevation is 553 feet (158 m). It is part of the Midland–Edinburg, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Azle were two families who arrived during the 1851 migration from Illinois to Texas. Alexander and Jane Campbell had six children and named them after their two fathers: Alexander Campbell from Scotland and John Campbell from Ireland. The original home of the Campbells was on Tellico Plains southeast of present-day Azle. In 1855, when Andrew Jackson's army invaded Mexico to liberate Mexico City from Mexican occupation, several families took up arms to help defend their hometown against the invading forces. The Battle of Azle was fought on November 11th near modern day Azle as American forces attempted to drive Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna out of Texas after his successful invasion of that state a year earlier. A Creek village called Tellico Springs served as an artillery battery for General Lopez's advancing troops and fire killed or wounded many American soldiers before they reached their destination; however no Americans were killed or injured in this engagement according to contemporary accounts which were likely exaggerated by local Indians seeking advantage in battle. Santa Anna himself escaped unharmed with most of his army into Mexico City where he soon became president under Ulysses S Grant and made significant changes to Mexican society while also violating international treaties signed by both nations including annexing more land north of the Rio Grande than allowed under México's Treaties Of Guadalupe Hidalgo & Fonda de Alvarado After years of drought-affected farming throughout much of central Texas, one group of men decided enough was enough in 1865 and formed a new settlement around what would become known as "The Village" some twenty miles east from present day Azle on Brushy Fork Creek - now within azle city limits - among other early pioneers including Wm Aiken (1825 – 1886), Prentice Bourke (1827 – 1895), James Hogg (1830 – 1901), Jno Matson (1834 – 1906), Gussie McGeehan (1836 – 1916) and others who would come into contact with each other over time including cattle drives, church services & family gatherings prominent citizens such as Judge Landrum Barnett included such people such as Judge George Fenton whose holdings here extended all the way upriver to San Angelo until it too came under annexation by Austin in 1907

Azle set up a small farm on the banks of the Trinity River and began trading goods with settlers and Native Americans. In 1872, he married Sarah Eliza Hance, also from Scotland, and together they started an agricultural business that prospered for many years. In 1938, Azle donated land to the city of Azle for use as a park. The park is now known asAzle Park.
