Azle is located in Hudspeth County, Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,812. Azle has a history dating back to 1881 when it was founded as a post office by J.D. Webb and Wm. Hays. The town was named for General David Azle who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the Civil War. In 1886, azle had a population of 350 residents and became an incorporated municipality with a land value of $3,500 per capita. By 1900, azle's population had grown to 2,000 residents and it became an unincorporated community with no land value until 1940 when it passed from public ownership to private control through the townsite program administered by the Hudspeth County Commissioners Office The first store on Main Street opened in 1881 which served as the nucleus of what would become Azle's economy over time. A bank opened in 1892 which helped spur economic development in Azle; this bank remains open to this day and is currently home to The Webb Brothers grocery store . The first post office was built on property that now includes Meetinghouse Square; this building served as both Post Office #1 (1881-1892) and Post Office #2 (1902-1910). After years of debate between local farmers about providing school supplies for their children or having their goods delivered directly to their homes via wagon or horseback,Methods were finally developed for delivering mail within Azle through railroads In 1916 a large millinery store called "The Gables" moved into town from Fort Worth after being displaced by World War I mobilization . Over time other businesses relocated into town including two banks (the First National Bank & Trust Company 1912-1920) as well as undertaker Drury & Sons funeral home ; these businesses remain active today but have since closed down .
