Azle is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Azle originated as a Spanish settlement on the Brazos River in 1845. It was named for José de la Garza y Pérez, a Revolutionary War general and governor of Coahuila and Texas. The first store opened in 1865. In 1886, the town became home to its first newspaper which lasted until 1893. In 1912, Azle's post office changed its name to azle after the Mexican state of Baja California. In 1920, Azle annexed an adjoining community of Rocksprings which had been founded by loggers two years earlier. Both communities were named for local Texans who had died in World War I or during the Spanish-American War: Antonio Lobreguerte from Rocksprings and Arthur Bliss from Zuni Springs (modern day Midland). In 1928, Azle established its own school system with six elementary schools and one high school (now McAllen Independent School District). That same year saw the opening of their first movie theater; it would be renamed Cinema Azle in 1957 before closing down in 1979 due to budget cuts. In 1941, AZLFE organized their very first rodeo event; it would also be their last significant event until 1978 when they merged with McAllen ISD to form McAllen Independent School District #5

The name Azle comes from Anglo-Saxon "Aalhþe" meaning "plain", "stead", or "settlement". The first settlers in what is now Azle arrived around 1836 as part of the Texas Annexation of 1845 and were granted land by Governor Edward M. Smith. They named their new community after General James Pemberton's brigade that fought in the Mexican–American War. By 1870, many people had moved to Azle because of its fertile soil and good water supply for farming. In 1881, a post office was established at Azle and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1924, during World War II when munitions production increased in nearby Dallas-Fort Worth, residents decided to build a military airfield on their property east of town which they christened Combined Arms Air Force Base (CAAF). Though never used as an operational base due to conflicts with other military installations throughout TX/Mexico City Area OKC etc., CAAF remains one of most well known local landmarks today & has even been included on some tourist maps
