Azle is a small town in Texas, located about thirty miles east of Dallas and sixty-five miles west of Austin. The population was 5,895 as of the 2010 census. Azle is one of the oldest communities in Texas dating back to 1836. The first settlers in what would become Azle were horse and wagon farmers who followed the Santa Anna River to its mouth in present-day Bowie County. By 1840, the seedbed for what would become Azle had been sown with industry when two German immigrants, Ferdinand and Isabella Kapp founded the Kapp Manufacturing Company on a tract of land that they donated in 1841. From this point forward, Azle grew rapidly as new waves of immigrants arrived – among them Germans, Irishmen and Italians –all looking for opportunity and opportunity only available within the bounds of their own countries or those under American rule. As cotton became America’s largest crop, so too did azle’s economy; by 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating here including several cotton ginners (the early mills still remain extant), a shoemaker’s shop (still active), three banks (one national bank remains operative), four churches (two Methodists and two Baptists) and dozens of residences. In 1872 entrepreneur John Denton established Denton's Millinery store in what later became known as Denton Square; by 1904 it had grown into one of Texas' leading textile stores with 10 employees manufacturing silk stockings, cravats and other fabrics from local woolen resources. Azle is a town located in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,831 at the 2010 census. It was founded by John C. Azle in 1876 and named for him. Azle was the original seat of government for Johnson County. The first post office in Azle opened in 1881. In 1902, the town incorporated as a city and has since grown to include areas adjacent to it on the north side of the Brazos River. The town developed around two railroad tracks that crossed over from Mexican Fork to serve local farmers on both sides of the river. A cotton gin and elevator were built near what is now downtown Azle in 1883, and a flour mill followed soon thereafter. Cotton production declined after World War I but resumed after the war; however, this went into decline again by 1930. Manufacturing recommenced during World War II but dwindled afterwards; however, azle's economy revived following reunification with Mexico in 1988%. Today,azle is an agricultural center with significant fiber-related industrial activity as well as tourism based businesses such as souvenir shops and bed-and-breakfast inns catering to tourists who visit its large concentration of restored historic buildings dating back to 1860s when it was still part of Mexico City's telegraph empire
