Coast guard gift history in Azle, Texas began with the formation of theAzle Coast Guard on January 6, 1915. The first member of the team was Capt. J.B. Saunders who had been appointed as the initial deputy director of police and fire services for San Antonio County. On July 5, 1916, Captain Saunders was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and became actingdirector of police and fire services for all counties in San Antonio County. Lt Col Saunders directed coast guard activities until his retirement on December 1, 1951. In 1935, two new vessels were built for the Azle Coast Guard-the SS John F Kennedy (1935) and SS Arizona (1936). The Kennedy’s primary purpose was maritime security while at the same time providing a tourist attraction which generated income for the town of Azle. Both vessels served until they were sold to different operators in 1955-1960 respectively. On May 3, 1959, Govt Order No: 12142 provided for establishment of a coast guard station at mile marker 8½ on Pecos Bayou within city limits of Azle. Lt Col George Shultz became head officer at this station which functioned as a training ground for future coast guardsmen during their early years with the service after graduating from college from Southwestern State Teachers College in 1932 degree program under Dr Clements Warshawsky then returned to duty full time with AZLE COAST GUARD February 15th 1959-. After almost forty years Coast Guardsman Sgt Ralph Laughlin retired from service August 30th 1984 as last surviving veteran of World War II/1945 era USS Oklahoma City coastal patrol squadron that assisted Mexican navy off Baja California Peninsula..

Azle and his wife Fannie. The first post office in Azle opened in 1882. The name "Azle" came from Spanish meaning "mouth of a river." In 1907, it became one of 36 towns consolidated into the new municipality of Round Rock. In 1912, azle citizens voted to rename their town for Sidney Sperry because he had given them financial support for a school project during the previous year. Sidney Sperry House still stands today as a local historical landmark and home to Azle Historical Museum which offers exhibits about Azle's history and culture
