Austin, Texas is home to one of the most vibrant coffee scenes in the United States. The oldest cafe in Austin was the Coffee House on Fifth Street, which opened its doors in 1847. The Coffee House became an important hub for local political leaders during the early days of Austin. In 1870, John Hogg founded the Independent Coffee House which served as a meeting place and workplace for businessmen and politicians. Houston businessman Jonathan Lethem leased the building from the Coffee House in 1883 and operated it as his own business until 1893 when he sold it to James Wigham. Wigham renamed it The Daily Texan before moving it across town to 8th Street in 1895. During this time, Austin's burgeoning coffee scene attracted attention from some of America's top roasters such as Casa de la Cocina (later Peet’s) and Harry Winston/Werner Herzog Associates who both opened shop here between 1907-1909. In 1915, Austin native Howard Schultz founded Starbucks based out of his old office at 711 Congress Ave., located adjacent to what is now UTSA University campus (now part of Johnson State Community College). At first Starbucks was an online store only; however, due to popular demand they started selling physical products starting July 1st 2009. Schultz led efforts behind Starbucks' move into Austin’s Warehouse District – located near Fourth Street between Lamar Boulevard and Guadalupe Avenue – where they began brewing their Flagship Coffees Bold Roasts using whole bean roasted beans sourced direct from small farmers throughout Latin America & Africa*. This innovative approach allowed them not onlyto compete head-to-head against larger national chains but also give back to their community by donating 100%of proceeds sales go back into supporting local charities*. *Starbucks moved permanently into its current facility on Lavaca Street just north of IH35VDOT

Austin, Texas is the capital of the United States of America. The city was founded in 1845 by James H. Bailey as a small trading post on the east side of Austin Creek. In 1849, Austin became an independent republic and was named for George Washington Austin. The Republic of Texas lasted until it was annexed into the United States in 1861 during the American Civil War. In 1795, two years after Galiste's discovery, French Canadian trader Pierre Dorion established a trading post at Red River Landing on Buffalo Bayou south of present-day downtownAustin without any buildings or evidence that anyone had lived there before him other than his own conjecture about a Indian village nearby which he believed could be reached by crossing Buffalo Bayou from Lake Travis northeastward to what is today Slaughter Lane near Interstate 45/I-35W (the original I-35W designation only applied to portions of East Texas). A year later Frenchman Nicholas Raynal built Fort Raynal just northwest ofpresent-day DowntownAustin on high ground overlooking Buffalo Bayou whereupon British explorer John Foust established Fort Foust along Brazos River southeast of present-day Killeen late in 1799 after claiming land grants from Mexican Governor Manuel Lugo including much of what are now Travis County and Williamson County.(Foust also built Fort Donelson east ofpresent day Round Rock Cemetery.)
