The Austin Army National Guard has a rich history that dates back to the 18th century. The unit was first formed in 1799 and served as part of the Texas militia during the Mexican War. In 1836, the Austin Army National Guard participated in the Battle of San Jacinto, which helped keep Texas from becoming a Mexican state. From 1861-1865, Austin's military forces supported Confederate States of America troops during the Civil War. After the war, Austin's army units served as garrison units in various locations around Texas until 1912 when they were disbanded. In 1912, an amendment to the United States Constitution grantedAustin city status and its own municipal government.
