The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History in Austin, Texas began in 1948. The USAF originally stationed the A-10 Warthog aircraft at Travis AFB in San Antonio, Texas. By the early 1960s, the A-10 had been replaced by the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle fighter jet and it was decided that a gift history would be appropriate to commemorate this change of planes. In 1962, aftermarket manufacturer AeroVironment AG donated an experimental unarmed U2 reconnaissance aircraft as a gift to Travis AFB. This was followed by donation of two more unarmed U2s in 1966 and 1968. Each time a different type of plane was gifted to Travis AFB as part of Air Force Deployed Gift History programming. In 1970, it was decided that the airplanes stationed at Travis AFB should no longer be used for combat operations but instead should be used for Display Aircraft displays associated with Memorial Day events and other special occasions at Travis AFB. It was also decided that these Display Aircraft were not to be used for any other purpose thanDisplay Aircraft displays associated with Memorial Day events and other special occasions at Travis AFB until they were retired in 1992. Since 1992, when these airplanes were retired from use at Travis AFB, they have been stored at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, Washington where they are currently on display as part of the Aeronautical Museum program operated by Wright-Patterson Army Airport near Dayton, Ohio. Unfortunately due to their age and condition some parts of these airplanes have begun to rot which has resulted in significant deterioration within them over time. However despite this lack of preservation efforts many pieces of Aviation history remain on view today throughout Fairchild Air Force Base’s Aeronautical Museum program which is open to the public every day from 9am until 4pm from May through October inclusive (closed Thanksgiving Day). Awards/ decorations received by members/officers who have served or are serving aboard AFDC through deployment include: Unit commendations; Overseas service awards (OSAs); National Defense Service Medal (NDSM); Legion d'honneur; Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC) ribbon; Republic Award; Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) ribbon; Combat Infantryman Badge - Vietnam IAW ; Senior enlisted member badge - First Class ; Master Sergeant rank insignia -Major General rank insignia ; Bronze Star Medal - World War II conflict category ; Silver Star Medal - World War II conflict category ; Bronze Tiger Award Ribbon only awarded posthumously );
