From its early days as a small agricultural community to its role as a major center for education and industry during the late 19th and 20th centuries, Athens has experienced significant transformations. Today, the town is still actively engaged in local commerce and government, with a rich cultural heritage that includes five fine arts museums, several dozen restaurants and bars, and two shopping malls. Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church This former schoolhouse was razed in 1892 to make way for Athens's first post office. The current church was built on the site in 1907 by Fr. John Fenton. The parish included Greeks from all over Texas and soon produced some of the state's most famous theologians, including Fathers John Rankin and Basil Humeau. Because of its location within walking distance of many homes, Athens became an important stop on travelers' routes through McLennan County during the early years of radio broadcasting. In 1935-36, Father Fenton finished construction on what is now known as Athen's Catholic Cathedral (later called Our Lady of Lourdes Parish), which served as home base for Houston Archbishop José Gomez until his death in 1984. When he vacated his episcopal palace at Montrose Boulevard and Main Street for reasons unrelated to health concerns – after serving more than 30 years – Gomez' successor Cardinal listings named Father Rufus King principal celebrant at services there beginning on October 1st each year until his retirement in 2006; thereafter it will be celebrated by Monsignor Richard Jansen (Rector Emeritus). This building also housed City Hall from 1898 until 1909 when it moved to downtown Houston to become part of Municipal Court Building No. 5 where it remains today; see photo below right.) The present day Bishopric Museum Complex In 1927-28 architect Harry Wylie designed what is now known as Bishopric Museum Complex – one of only a few buildings erected specifically for that purpose within Atlanta'sdesign district during that time period (the others being Peachtree Center mall). Completed just before World War II due tohensaval activity outside then-foreign minister James Byrnes' mansion on Ponce de Leon Avenue NW – which had been requisitioned by General George Custer after his march through Atlanta - museum officials believe the project may have been motivated less by desire to document historical events related thereto than practical considerations such as increased space available once exhibition galleries were constructed adjacent to Forsyth Barr Stadium across Luckett Drive NW (now Georgia Dome Drive NW) south of Druid Hills Road NE; photos above left show completed structure prior to demolition/landscaping while photos above right shows currently extant building) It operated out of temporary quarters at Auburn University’s Recreation Park between 1951-1955 while new facilities were constructed nearby at Third Ward Parkade before moving permanently into new facility design announced by Mayor Cokerette in 1957 following completionof Exposition Hall garage extension) On September 25th 1954 newlyweds Eleanor Roosevelt And Harry Truman attended opening ceremonies inside newly renovated Bishopric Museum Complex following their honeymoon there with First Lady Mamie Eisenhower
