Athanasia (Athens) was founded in 1875 by John F. Matson and his family as a cotton plantation in what is now Athens County, Texas. The name "Athanasia" comes from the Greek word athanassi, meaning "to plant." In 1889, Matson sold the plantation to George W. Beard and Sons for $8,500. In 1916, Beard and Company sold the plantation to J.C. Barnes of Dallas for $210,000. Barnes renamed it Athens Plantation after his hometown of Athens, Georgia. The property passed through several hands until it was purchased by Harry Hays in 1929 and became part of Hays Corning Incorporated empire until its sale to Coca-Cola Bottlers Trust in 1935 for $2 million. Since then, Athens Plantation has been used as a research laboratory and vacation home for senior executives at Coca-Cola Bottlers Trust headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
