Arlington is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the northcentral side of the Rio Grande River. According to the 2010 census, Arlington has a population of 177,912. It is the fourth-largest city in Texas and home to both The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and George Washington University School of Medicine and Dentistry. The UTA campus is also one of four flagship universities in the Lone Star State. In addition, Arlington is home to many major military installations including Fort Worth Army Airbase, australian air force Base Myer-Henderson Hall and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The name "Arlington" was given by General John J Pershing when he named what is now Arlington County after his mother's birthplace in Northern Ireland – Armagh – which he had visited while serving as an army officer during World War I. Pershing was motivated to name the area after Armagh because its location resembled that of Irish Catholic parish churches built around a small town called Ardnacrusha (now Derry). In 1836, James Kenedy founded what became known as The Republic Line Railroad Company through what are now Arlington Heights and Fairfax counties into central Texas from Brownsville via San Antonio and Austin; this line later became part of The Texan Central Railway company before it merged with Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1889 to form The Houston & Galveston Railway system. On November 15, 1860, Dallas explorer Jesse James received news that his brother Billy had been shot by John Custer at Little Big Horn Creek near Bighorn grasslands east of present day Richardson Ranch; this event helped spur James into a life-long exploration for ranching opportunities in central Texas which eventually led him to found Dallas &Fort Worth National Bank in 1903 Just north of today's Southpark Mall.
