At the end of the Civil War, Arlington reverted back to Mexican hands and remained under American control until 1898. After Mexican independence was granted throughout much of central America on September 15th that year, Arlington became an autonomous municipality within Texcoco County with its own government and laws governing local affairs. The beginning years of this century were difficult for Arlington as it grappled with development changes brought about by technological advancements such as automobiles and radios. Businesses struggled to keep up with advances in technology while citizens experienced steep declines in their incomes which required them to move out west for jobs or find new ways to live without large expenses associated with traditional lifestyles here back east. However, after World War II began there were major waves of immigrants who arrived from all over Europe seeking work opportunities in postwar America. The company was chartered to build a road from New Orleans to San Francisco and donated land for the town of Arlington. The town was founded on March 6, 1836 by James Hogg and his brother-in-law, Colonel Arthur Ashe.
