Arlington, Texas is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 795,813 at the 2010 census. Arlington is one of three cities that make up Dallas–Fort Worth; the others are Irving and Plano. Arlington is also home to The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and many other high-technology companies. It has been called "The Liveliest City in America" by Forbes magazine. The first humans to live in what is now Arlington arrived about 12,000 years ago and hunted game around present-day downtown. In 1836, President James K. Polk sent surveyors to map out a new state for Texas and included Arlington as part of it – much to the chagrin of Austinites who argued that their city should have been charted first. The city's growth was rapid from its incorporation as a town on July 3, 1837 until it became an independent municipality on December 1, 1851 when it annexed land from Kaufman County. The original site of Arlington had two streams running through it: East Fork Trinity and West Fork Trinity. These streams were diverted into Lake Rayney by developers in order to create a large artificial lake that would become one of Dallas' most popular recreational areas today. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell rode his horse across North Avenue Bridge into central Arlington after escaping from nearby Fort Worth during Union forces' attempt to drive him out of Texas Heights while he was attending an army conference at Camp Houston northeast of town. This event quickly became known as "Ewell's Ride." Many people in town identified with Confederate causes and there was hearty support shown for them throughout the war effort under local commanders including John Buford Peete and Edwin Mouncey respectively On November 14, 1901 – days after McKinley was elected Ulysses S Grant's Vice President – local businessmen organized an election for what would become City Council District 5 seat which then went uncontested due to term limits applicable only to members serving four years or less before being reappointed/referred back into office via primary/election process Prior thereto existing zoning ordinances were amended effective January 1st 1902 thru October 15th 1902 creating various streetscape patterns such as tight radial streetscapes consistent with previous plans developed between 1870s & 1880s without reference thereto resulting generally in more wide boulevard arterial streetscapes iirc similar enough stylistically (& pictorially) across denominations despite relatively recent changes wrought since those times consequent herein discussed plan amendments thereof - all details appended & filed herewith evinced thereby within this record Additionally herein set forth plat thereof accompanying this record datedDallas TX US pat nr 972609

The population reached 100,000 by 1870, but declined thereafter as plantations began to be developed in Arlington and other parts of central Texas.
