From the late 1800s until the early 1900s, Angleton was home to one of the most significant shooting ranges in Texas. The range was located on a small piece of property that is now part of the city of Austin. It served as a training ground for both military and law enforcement officers and was also used for target practice by civilians. During this time, there were several different types of shooters who frequented the range. There were those who enjoyed using pistols, while others preferred shotguns or rifles. Regardless of their chosen weapon, all visitors were expected to take part in basic training at the range before being allowed to use it on actual rounds with other shooters. This type of training helped individuals become familiar with each other's weapons and helped them learn how to work together as a team. The range also played an important role in providing opportunities for young people like Johnnie Ray Sr., Jr., to experience firearms firsthand. Johnnie Ray Sr., Jr., was born in 1923 and grew up around guns and shooting circles throughout his childhood. By the time he turned 18 years old, he had already learned how to shoot handguns and rifle effectively from his father. He later became known as one of Texas' top Pistol shooters and participated in many sanctioned events across the state. In 1948, Angleton hosted its first shotgun show which attracted attention from some of America's leading gun manufacturers. At that time, shotguns were still considered relatively new technology and weren't well-known across much of Europe or Asia Pacific alike. As a result, these companies decided to offer their products at an unprecedented discount compared to other brands available at similar prices points elsewhere at that time. Angleton, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,955 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Angleton has been inhabited by Anglo-American settlers since the mid 1800s. In 1874, Angleton was platted as a village and named after General John A. Angleton who fought in the Mexican-American War. Angleton post office opened on July 9, 1875, and closed on December 31, 1974. The first settler in what is now Angleton was Wm Hargrave who arrived in 1876 from Illinois with his family. He farmed land near present day Angleton and built a cabin there which he later called "The Round House." In 1880 Wm Jordon moved to angleton from Nacogdoches also within Hudspeth County and began farming around present day Jordan Creek Road and Old Quarry Road near Lick Branch creek. By 1886 angletons had started electing their own officials including Doc Stephens who served as justice of peace for 3 years from 1889 to 1893; S michael jordan (1892 -1974) who served as mayor from 1928 until 1934; Elisha Clements (1894 -1987) who served as state senator from 1907 until 1933; Gertrude Kerr (1905 –2001) who was a businesswoman and educator before she became an actress; JB Pettigrew (1920 –2002) an insurance agent and developer; Everett Beal (1925 –2000), an electrician originally from Dallas but now living in Reading, Pennsylvania; Don Dixon (1927 -2009), owner/operator of Dixon's Drive Inn which is still open today
Angleton was founded in 1872 by the Texans George and Martha Angleton. It became a municipality in 1901. The town is located in Hudspeth County, Texas, on the east side of the Trinity River.
