The Texas Navy has been a part of the Texas state flag for over 100 years. The navy is one of the oldest services in the state and it traces its origins back to 1846, when Commodore John F. Smith organized a squadron of warships to protect shipping along the Texas coast from pirates. Over time, other branches have joined the navy – most notably Air Force One, which was created in 1975 as an auxiliary branch of the military. In 2014, Navy Rear Admiral Donny Grooms became first person ever to be promoted to commodore in the Texas Navy. Today, there are three active fleets within the navy: The Corpus Christi Fleet (responsible for maritime security operations off of South America), The San Antonio Fleet (responsible for patrolling central Americas waters), and The Galveston Fleet (responsible for coastal defense operations). Additionally, there are several reserve fleets that provide support should something happen to any of their member fleets. Eachfleet has its own insignia and colors which can be seen on vessels and uniforms throughout the state. Since its inception, navy gift history in Angleton has included both unique and historic items. Some of these include four USN destroyers donated by then-Governor Rick Perry in 2008; two submarines donated by Shell Oil Company; a Humvee replica gifted by local businesswoman Diane Greene; and an anchor from USS Constitution Museum shipyard that was used as part of a naval salute at Comanche County Fair in 2012. In 1931, Angleton became the seat of Gregg County after it was combined from Dallas County and neighbouring Tyler Parish. The county seat moved to San Jacinto in 1935 because of the nearby Pan American World Airways airport that was built that year by then-County Judge Edward "Tubby" Barnes Sr.. On July 4, 1968, former Representative Garnet Coleman (D) died in office when his car stopped on I-10 near here while he was driving from Houston to Austin for a rally against Lyndon Johnson's re-election campaign

Angleton was founded in 1872 by John A. Angleton, a white grazier and cattleman who homesteaded the land on which it stands today. The town grew quickly due to its location at the junction of two wagon trails, and Angleton became a popular stopping place for travelers on their way to Fort Worth or Dallas. Angleton’s growth continued into the 20th century, with development taking place in the downtown area, along State Highway 114 (later highway 6), and in the newly created community of Springtown. In 1916, Angleton received its municipal charter from the Texas Legislature, making it one of the first towns in Texas to have this distinction. During World War II, Angleton played an important role as a munitions dump for RAF Station Dowding near Waco. After the war ended, anglers began to visit the town again and property values increased significantly; however, when Interstate 30 was built through central Texas in the early 1970s, Angleton lost much of its commercial appeal and declined rapidly in popularity.Today, there is little remaining evidence of Angleton’s original population or economy – only some small remnants of dwellings dating back to 1872 remain standing among scatteredgrowth around downtown.
