The history of the National Guard in Angleton, Texas can be traced back to the early 1900s. The first national guard unit was organized in 1903 and served in the Texas state militia. In 1907, a second national guard unit was formed and served until 1911. A third national guard unit was activated in 1916 and served until 1921. In 1935, a fourth national guard unit was activated and served until 1938. In 1945, a fifth national guard unit was activated and served for two years before being disbanded. The last federal military deployment of the Angleton National Guard occurred on November 16th, 1951 when troops were sent to support presidential elections in Florida. Today, there are still active Angleton National Guard units stationed throughout the state of Texas. Angleton, Texas is a small town located in Angelina County, Texas. The population was 1,816 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Angleton started as a cattle ranch and now has a variety of businesses including a bank, grocery store, post office, Toyota dealership and more. Angleton also has two schools: The Angleton Independent School District No. 2 (AISD) and Angleton Consolidated High School (ACHS). According to the 2010 census, the population of Angleton is 40% Hispanic and 60% white. Angleton was founded in 1881 by John Workman as a cattle ranch that served as an important center for trade with surrounding counties. The workman family moved to this location in 1885 after they lost their Rancho Rincon de Tolosa property to foreclosure. In 1907 John Workman's son-in-law Waddell Hinton donated land for what would become Angleton ISD which opened its doors on November 1, 1909. The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1789. The first national guard units were raised in West Virginia on September 12, 1792. On November 25, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for a National Guard to help protect the Union during the Civil War. The first regiment was organized on December 6, 1861 and served in South Carolina until 1865.
Angleton was founded in 1881 by J.W. Angleton and his son, W.H. Angleton. It became a town in 1907 and a city in 1912. The population of the city was 3,811 as of the 2010 census. The name "Angleton" is from Spanish meaning "headquarters." The first residents were primarily German farmers who had settled along the lower Sabine River in what is now Wise County in Texas during the 1840s and 1850s. They gradually increasingly adopted Anglo-American culture, which left its mark on many aspects of local life including language, customs, food habits and architecture. In 1851, John Hogg settler James Robertson erected a log cabin on what is now Loop Rd., about one mile northwest of what would become Angleton. By 1870 there were at least 10 such buildings among some 100 settlers living within 5 miles of the river bank near present-day downtown Angleton (later known as Westville). In 1881, J.W. Angleton organized a company to purchase 9 acres (3 ha) northeast of town for $1 per acre (0·30 per sq m). The land was donated by Hogg's father-in-law William Wallace Buttrick itty Baddeley III who also served as mayor from 1886 to 1888 and postmaster general from 1893 to 1897 under Ulysses S Grant’s rule as president pro tempore; he also developed much of Westville into an agricultural center during this time period In 1903, after years of discussion between Mayor Buttrick and other civic leaders over plans for downtown development including expanding sidewalks and building an opera house/theater complex100 blocks south across US 71 from East Villa Park), voters approved a proposition authorizing construction of both structures with money raised through special sales taxes levied on property values northward along US 71 corridor west of Loop Rd., thenceforth called “Downtown Angleton” or simply “Angleton” .
