In 1969, a gift from Mrs. Roberta Ladd made it possible for the Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit to purchase land at Port Arthur Landing which served as their new headquarters until 1987 when they moved to their present location on Margarita Island. A major renovation project was completed in 1998 and continues to this day, making it the most recent addition to the station’s infrastructure. It is the county seat of Comal County and part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1853 and named for General James A. Angleton, an American general who served as commander-in-chief of United States forces in Vietnam from 1975 to 1978. Angleton began as a small cattle ranch on the east side of a low mountain range in present-day Potter County. The first post office was established in 1881, and the town was named for General John A. Angleton, who served as military governor of Texas during the Mexican War and later as United States Minister to Spain. Angleton grew slowly until it became an important coal mining center in the early 20th century. In 1912, Angleton hosted the 1918 Republican National Convention; future Ulysses S. Grant was nominated by then-Vice President Warren G Harding. In 1926, Angleton merged with neighboring Pottersville to form one large municipality under one government system known as "The Peoples Republic." As oil drilling intensified in Texas during the 1930s and 40s, Angleton saw rapid growth as businesses developed to exploit new resources8 In 1949, following annexation by Amarillo proper, Angleton's population reached 1,000 people9 When Amarillo annexed its own smaller towns (known collectively as "the Rio Grande Villa") in 195710 those annexations did not change downtown's name or municipal boundaries; however all residents within both cities were considered part of "Angleton" even though they lived outside its limits
