The Andrews family has been in Texas for over a century and their history can be traced back to the early 1800s. The Andrewses were first settlers in what is now Andrews County, Texas. They arrived on the east coast of Texas in 1827 and started a farm near present-day Mission Road. By 1830, theAndrews had moved to what is now northwest Austin, but they continued to farm and raise livestock. In 1845, John A. Andrew founded the city of Austin as a result of his efforts to make his land available for farming purposes. TheAndrews helped found many other towns throughout Texas before moving away from agriculture in the late 1800s. John A. Andrew's grandson, J.A.'s son James T., started manufacturing books and publishing them from a printing shop located on First Street in Austin between Lamar Boulevard and Congress Avenue during the mid-19th century until it burned down in 1907. James T.'s successors continued publishing under different names until 1925 when they merged with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Company to become Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company Incorporated (HMPIC). During World War II, HMPIC produced paper products for the military including cigarettes and chewing gum code named after American generals Dwight D Eisenhower and George Patton. After World War II ended, HMPIL published several new series of books such as The Great Gatsby which was turned into an opera by Puccini that starred Leonard Bernstein as Fenton Youngblood and Nance O'Neill as Daisy Buchanan; however, profits tanked at HMPC because readers tired of war movies being released annually instead of fulfilling schedule set by management).
