In 1929, when the United States Air Force was established as a separate branch of the military, Andrews AFB became its first operational home. The base originally consisted of just two small airport buildings, but in 1933 it was redesignated RFC Andrews. In 1942, Andrews AFB became the largest American airbase outside of Japan and served as an emergency landing ground for Operation OVERLORD. In the early 1950s, it was enlarged to include three large complexes housing more than 11,000 people. The town of Andrews, Texas was founded in 1876 by John Andrews and his brother-in-law, George Edwards. The original settlement was on the Brazos River, about 20 miles west of Austin. In 1876, Andrew's family moved to what is now the city of Austin and began a small farmstead near today's Paseo de San Antonio. With the founding of the University of Texas at Austin in 1881, Andrews became one of its early students. In 1902, he donated land to build a new school forAustin children. The school was named in honor of Andrews' wife Jennie Lubbock McMurry (1861-1935). From 1897 until his death in 1935, Andrews served as the first mayor of Austin. By 1943,Andrews had become an American hero due to his work with government officials during World War II as head of tradeoffs between U.S. military efforts and German economic sanctions against Nazi Germany
On November 3, 1874, Andrew Harris was elected the first Mayor of Andrews, Texas. He served two terms before being re-elected on November 6, 1880 and December 1, 1884. As mayor, he helped to create the city government and develop its resources.
