Amarillo is the capital of Texas and the second-largest city in the United States. The city was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836, after they were driven out of Texas by General Sam Houston. The Texans expelled Santa Anna from Amarillo in 1847, but he returned to town several times until his death in 1851. The first post office was established at Amarillo on December 12, 1892. The discovery of oil rigs near Amarillo led to increased development around the city beginning in 1914. In 1930, Amarillo joined forces with Wichita Falls to form the Wichita County Municipal Utility District (WCMD). WCMD became one of America's largest municipally owned utilities when it merged with TXNations Incorporated in 1996. Water resources have been an important focus for developers throughout Amarillo's history; today it has water supplies from five wells and two desalination plants

The first national guard unit was organized on December 1st, 1790 by George Washington as a reaction to the French and Indian War (1754-1763). At that time, militias were not well funded or equipped and were often used for policing and defense only. This lack of military capability led to several battles between British regulars and American militia in which many people died. In response, Washington organized a national guard unit with twelve companies strong from each state. The firstdragoons were also formed in this way. In 1812, Congress passed an act granting citizenship to all who served in the national guard regardless of race or color. From this point forward, black soldiers were segregated within the white units until after World War II when they became full members of the military. Many congressmen believed that these men had risked their lives for our country and should be treated as equals. This act helped solidify relations between our nation's races and contributed to America's role as a world power during her golden years.
