Amarillo is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 78,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. Amarillo is located on the Llano River and has been part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area since its incorporation as a city in 1887. The City of Amarillo was founded by Will Rogers on October 5, 1887 as an outgrowth of his land speculation business in what is now Midland County. In 1907, Amarillo annexed neighboring Hardin County to form a new municipality which became known as "Amarillo." The first mayor of Amarillo was VFW Post #2195 General Wm. Hildebrandt. On January 1, 1912, it was announced that Amarillo would be annexation into Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA formed on November 15th that year when Dallas-Forth Worth annexed all but the unincorporated communities of Northwest Dallas and Northeast Irving; these were considered independent municipalities until they were merged into Arlington Heights effective January 1st, 2013. This made AmarrillOsa one of only two cities in Texas to have both been an annexee and non-annexee within their own respective metropolitan areas – along with Austin (the other). Since its incorporation as a city in 1887, Amarillo has undergone many changes including growth from just over 100 residents per square mile to over 2200 residents per square mile contemporary with most American cities above 3000 residents per square mile including those larger than Amarillo such as Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls TX
