Amarillo experienced rapid growth following World War II due to the oil boom which began in 1948 and continued until the early 1970s when production peaked at almost 100 million barrels per day (mbpd). However, since then there has been significant decline in local economic activity as production has plummeted and GDP per capita has declined precipitously. Since 2000 however some new development has begun to revitalize downtown Amarillo as well as other areas of the cityscape including Overton Park and Westside Park near State Fairgrounds/Downtown Airport
