Alvin, Texas is a small town in the US state of Texas. It is located in East Harris County, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Houston. In 2010, it had a population of 909. The first Europeans to visit Alvin were Frenchmen and Spanish explorers in the early 18th century. The town was founded on November 10, 1879 by wealthy oilman John Waddell and his wife Blanche Bourgeois. Waddell named the town after General James K. Polk who had been president during the American Civil War and later served as secretary of war under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Alvin was originally part of Hudspeth County until its territory was taken up by Galveston County in 1876 whenHouston was established as an independent city. The original townsites at present-day Alvin and Springtown were platted in 1879 by local citizens Jno Neely and George Sledge respectively; these two towns are now within the walls of Houston. At that time there were only a few hundred residents living in what is now East Harris County; today, it has an estimated population over 100,000 people! In 1911 Alvin experienced its most significant development when Texas A&M University opened its new campus there; this led to increased commercial activity around the town which helped spur growth throughout the years. However, it would not be until 1978 when Alvin saw its first major expansion when Hurricane Ike struck causing extensive damage to both homes and businesses within the community; however, despite this setback Alvin continued to grow rapidly with many new businesses being created including Hooters restaurant which currently occupies a massive building on Main Street just south of Interstate 10 near downtown Houston!
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was organized. In 1839, a vote was taken to annex Mexico and Texas seceded from Mexico. The split in the Mexican population led to the founding of two new states: California and New Mexico. In 1845, General Sam Houston defeated Antonio López de Santa Anna at San Jacinto River Bridge in what is now TX 77th Infantry Regiment Museum located east of Alvin in San Jacinto County.
