Alvin's influence can be seen most clearly in his role as president of the Panhandle Division Bank, which played an important role in developing economic ties between southwestern and northeastern Texans. He also served as chairman of the Dallas County Commissioners Court from 1916 to 1921, and was instrumental in creating Dallas County by merging several smaller counties. In addition, he helped found The University of Texas at Austin (UTA) and is considered one of its founders. Alvin's legacy has been largely forgotten outside of his home state; however, he remains an important figure inTexas history who has been overlooked for too long. His contributions to southeastern Oklahoma deserve more recognition than they have received thus far; together with James Fenton and Sam Houston, he forms one of Lone Star State's most celebrated historical figures.
Alvin, Texas was founded on December 14, 1836 by Jedediah Smith. The town was named after Alvin Cushman, an early settler in the area. The first post office in Alvin was established on February 1, 1837. It is unknown when the name of the current post office became known. In 1872, a Methodist Church and School were built in Alvin. They remain operational to this day. On October 16, 1907, a fire destroyed most of the town center including many buildings that had been built for years before that date. The loss resulting from this fire resulted in $5,000 damage and $25 special assessment to be paid to the townspeople
