Alton is a town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,649 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alton was founded in 1878 by John Hogue and others who came from central Kansas Territory. The community name "Alton" comes from an early settler's decision to name his new farmstead after the Battle of Alamo Creek (1836), which helped give birth to the cowboy movement in America. According to legend, when General Antonio López de Santa Anna learned of the location of Alton, he ordered all Mormons living east of San Antonio be burned alive as punishment for their support of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. However, local militia killed most of Santa Anna's forces before they could reach Alton; only one Mormon survived and warned other settlers about Santa Anna's plan. In 1881, John Hogue erected a log cabin on what would later become known as Main Street in what is now downtown Alton. He started a general store and post office there on November 8th and continued operations until 1902 when he sold his business to J C Goodrich & Sons for $5200 cash. In 1912 Goodrich donated land for a high school that eventually became Exeter Middle School; this building still stands today and houses the town library system. Since its founding as a small town, Alton has seen many expansions: On May 6th, 1909 residents voted to incorporate as a city; this effort failed but it did result in annexation by Amarillo on December 12th 1959 (the first such annexation in TX). The city government was reestablished on March 17th 1962 with Mayor A C White becoming its first mayor after being elected at-large with no party nominations or personal contributions from any citizens within town limits). Alton, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Alton has a history dating back to 1874 when it was founded as a cattle ranch by David and Lillie Webb. The Webers died in 1938 and their son, Roy Webb, took over the ranch. In 1949, Roy Webb donated land to the town for use as an elementary school and high school. The first building in Alton was the old school house which served as both schools until 1963 when the current high school was opened. In that year, Alton also received its first post office which operated from 1923-1943. The original settlers of Alton were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1874 after trekking across Nevada and Arizona searching for a place to live free from religious persecution. Reverend Wauker had been sent by Bishop Kearny of Austin to scout out suitable locations for converts in what is now Hudspeth County (later McLennan County). After visiting various settlements near Alpine and Rockport on the Texan Gulf Coast, he determined that Alton would be optimum because it had two streams running through it – one of which provided flowing water for irrigation purposes while another ran beneath local hills providing privacy from other settlers’ view; also nearby dense oak woodland assisted with cooling weather during summer months; finally its location not only afforded easy access to wagon trains coming down the Arkansas River but also offered convenient hunting opportunities due to its many Sharp Grass Prairie Fowl populations living near several waterholes throughout most of its area.). The first church built in Alton was dedicated on July 15th, 1874 by Reverend Wauker with members of his congregation following soon thereafter.
