Alton, Texas is a small town in Texas on the border of Mexico. The population was 3,479 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Corpus Christi-Houston metropolitan area and has a total area of 24 square miles (67 square kilometers). Alton is about an hour's drive from Houston and less than an hour from Dallas. The first post office in Alton was established on December 10, 1879. The present day Alton Municipal Airport was built in 1923. In 1924, Alton had one school and two churches. A new high school was built in 1931 and named John Fenton High School after Mr. Fenton who donated land for it. In 1940, when World War II started, Alton had three businesses including a clothing store, a fuel station and a welding shop run by Japanese Americans because they were needed to help with the war effort. One year later, all these businesses closed due to the war economy which made it difficult for residents to get work or support their families back home; however, during 1946-1947 there were six businesses open including four stores that ran by women: one gown store (owned by Mrs. Pohl), one hat store (owned by Mrs. Wagner), one shoe store (owned by Mrs. Kapp) and one grocery store (owned by Mrs. Schroeder). After World War II ended in 1945 and until 1971 all agricultural production ceased because of budget cuts caused by government austerity policies known as “the Great Depression” throughout much of North America since the end of World War I through most of Europe through changes brought about through global economic disruptions following world wars I & II etc.; however within twelve months following our return from WWII military 'resettlement' became mandated throughout many rural areas across our country thru various programs called Farm Bill/GPOs euphemistically referred to then as AFDC/Welfare Reform programs etc.), local governments had been given power over select aspects of society such as education; so when newly elected County Judge Royce Ladd announced his intention to create what he called "A Quality Community", with goals that included job creation opportunities for veterans returning from overseas service ('How Soon Is That Possible'), particularly those seeking housing assistance although still living on AFDC benefits suddenly faced overwhelming competition from other interest groups vying for a share in what would become known as 'the gravy train'. It should be noted that while today certain aspects are more overt than others at this point in history--namely political correctness--much progress has also been made regarding community development not only here but also neighboring towns like Midland where both have experienced population growth rates outpacing even popular tourist destinations since the late 1990s despite lack thereof herein relative thereto...
