The Alton Air Force Base Museum is home to the world’s largest air force deployment gift history. The museum is dedicated to telling the story of the air force’s role in World War II and the Cold War. The displays at the museum include aircraft, weapons, uniforms and artifacts from Alton Air Force Base. The first airmen stationed at Alton were cadets from Texas A&M University who trained at Rodeo Field in California. On September 15, 1939, 12 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses of the United States Army's Ninth Bombardment Wing arrived at Alton for a five-month training period under command of Colonel William “Hap” Arnold. These bombers were used as troop transports during World War II. In December 1945, when Japan surrendered, General Douglas MacArthur ordered all American military forces in Japan to retire or be redeployed to continental United States. With no Japanese troops remaining on Japanese soil, Arnold ordered his 9th Bombardment Wing to fly cargo planesload supplies and personnel back into Japan for occupation purposes. When hostilities ended on August 8, 1945, many of these crews returned home but about 60% of the original bomber squadron remained stationed at Alton with Convair P-38 Lightning fighters and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts (later Mustang) escort aircraft until it was disbanded on October 1st 1945 due to budget cuts within USAAC . In 1946 this squadron was reactivated as part of 4th Fighter Command based out of El Paso TX . It flew Lockheed F-104 Starfighters until it was redesignated 4th Tactical Fighter Wing ( Tactical Fighter Forces ) on July 15 1959 with fighter aircraft only.. It flew Lockheed RF-4 Phantom Sabres until it was redesignated 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing ( Tactical Fighter Forces ) on November 15 1972 with all fighter types being equipped with Northrop F-5E Tiger Tomcats & McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets .. From 1978 through 1988 3d TFW operated Republic F/A‑18 Hornets as decoys for USAF exercises over Diego Garcia in southeast Pacific Ocean .... On May 20th 1993 Col Wm Halsey transferred command from USAF Central Command – Yokota AB , Japan to USAF custody effective June 1st .... After 5 years flying Typhoons supported by strike Eagle aerial refueling tanker AgustaWestland EPM2(F) "Diana" helicopters; lineage continued when new seat conversion unit - McDonnell Douglas MD‑820PAC - activated .... As an active duty memberof Third TFW I took partin operations against Iraqi targets during Gulf War .. Alton AFB Museum has several items that represent combat missions flown by members of 2nd Lt Oscar Meese's 133rd FS "Stroudsburg". One item is a control tower plaque which reads "This building was destroyed Jul 82 whilst bombing Baghdad." This particular mission took place while operating from RAF Bentwaters RAF near London England. Another plaque represents another combat mission which took place while operating from RAF Lakenheath UK also known as Operation Market Garden where they bombed German positions around Amsterdam Netherlands during 1944

Alton, Texas is a small town located in the eastern part of Texas. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is located in Ellis County. Alton is one of two towns in Ellis County and its ZIP code is 76701. Alton was founded by Mormons in 1876. Its first post office opened in 1881. The following year, Alton became the county seat for Ellis County. In 1886, Alton was chosen as the site for the new Texas State Capitol after a competition organized by Congressman James Kountz to determine which town would be the site of state government for all of Texas. The original capitol building (now used as a museum) was completed in 1893 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire in 1892. The present capitol was built between 1925 and 1928 using funds acquired from oil drilling on nearby Bonham Channel

Alton is a small town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The first settlement in what is now Alton was made in 1851 by James Hildebrand and his family. They named their property "Henderson" after Henderson County, Tennessee, where they located their farm. In 1853, Alton's first post office was established and operated under the name "Olivia." In 1860, Alton voted to secede from Texas and form its own state called Oregon Territory. Oregon Territorial Governor John McLarty issued a proclamation declaring that all citizens of Texas who were not able or unwilling to participate in the new state would be given six months' notice to leave and head for Utah or Nevada if they desired. A total of 2,000 residents left Alton within those six months; only 400 returned. On November 3rd 1865, during The Mexican–American War (), General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived at Houston with an army numbering over 100 thousand men and women on horseback to attempt an invasion of Texas through Mexico into California. At least 9000 Texans took up arms against General Santa Anna and successfully defended themselves against his forces for three days before capitulating on November 8th 1865 at San Jacinto River near modern day Houston (the Battle of San Jacinto ). This event has been called "The turning point of the war". After this battle occurred Alton became one of two towns (the other being Victoria) in Midland County which chose not to secede from Texas as did Austin & Travis County
Alton was founded in 1872 by a group of Baptist ministers. The town grew quickly, and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. In the early years of the 20th century, Alton became an important manufacturing center for agricultural products. The town also became known for its piano manufacturing company, which produced some of the best-quality pianos in the country.
