Military gift history in Allen, Texas began with the Civil War. Union troops arrived in the town on Dec. 12, 1861, and soon found themselves in conflict with Confederate forces. A store owner named James Giddings refused to sell arms to the Confederacy, and was charged with treason. He was eventually freed and moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he founded a hardware store. From here, Giddings developed a close relationship with Union General Stephen Franklin Burnside, who bought his hardware store in 1865. At the same time as Giddings' Hardware Store was forming its business model, anotherstore opened its doors in Allen - this one belonging to John Dillard. Dillard had been born and raised in nearby Dallas County and had worked his way up through the ranks of local businesses until he became president of Mesquite cotton ginners Local No. 3 (later Mesquite Chamber of Commerce). In 1875 he placed an order for 1 million rounds of ammunition from Buffalo Arsenal Ammunition Co., Ltd., making him one of the first businessmen in Texas to do such a thing (at that time Ammo companies were limited to selling cartridges). In 1876 Dillard married Anna Lloyd; they would have six children together before Anna died five years later at age 36 due to pneumonia contracted while visiting her family back home in Dallas County. John Dillard continued running his business until his death at 83 years old on Jan 22nd, 1937; during his lifetime he served as vice-president of Mesquite Cotton Ginners Local No. 3 (later Mesquite Chamber of Commerce), chairman of the board of directors for Texarkana Coal & Coke Co., director for The University ofTexas at Austin (1902-1907), trustee emeritus for Baylor University (1920-1927), member Emeritus Boardof Trustees for Houston Independent School District (1937-1959)

On January 1, 2015, Allen became one of six communities in Hockley County that were merged into the newly formed Arlington County pursuant to an act of the Texas Legislature which granted countyhood to all unincorporated areas within Travis County along with Austin and Brownwood.
