The Coast Guard Station in Alice served as a harbor and security guard for the area until 1951 when it was relocated to Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station in Alice closed its doors and was disbanded. Alice, Texas (population: 21,951) is a small town located in the Texas Hill Country. The population was estimated at 21,951 as of the 2010 census. Alice is one of several towns in Hudspeth County and it is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Alice was founded by Scotsmen in 1859 as an agricultural community. It grew rapidly during the late 1800s into a major railroad junction and cattle market center. By 1920, Alice had developed into a small town with a population of over 30 residents. Growth slowed after World War II due to depleted resources and competition from larger cities in Texas and Oklahoma. However, since the 1990s, there has been significant growth in Alice due to its location close to Austin and its attractions such as fishing, golfing and horseback riding. The name "Alice" comes from the Scottish word "albatross," meaning "a great blackbird." The first settler in what is now Alice was John McLaren who arrived around 1859. He built a cabin on what is now called Main Street and named his settlement "Alice." In 1870, Alexander McKay settled here also and established himself as a cattle rancher with his herd of six thousand head of feeder cattle plus 700 hogsheads of corn which he shipped down the river to Matagorda Bay for shipment back upriver to Wichita Falls. This early history reflects many things that still characterize Alice today; agriculture being an important factor along with Scotchmen being responsible for most everyone who lived here until about 1930 when waves of Mexican immigrants began moving into Hudspeth County bringing their culture along with them. Today's citizens are descendants bothof those settlers who came before them as well as recent arrivals who have brought new experiences and perspectives to this place they call home! In 1925, Alice became one of only two communities in Hudspeth County (the other being Georgetown) to be connected by radio linkages providing residents with immediate access to information vital for life on their farmsteads or businesses across miles radius! Today's telecommunications industry provides another layer of importance for this rural community which depends heavily on services like education, health care & funerals!
