The history of the Alamo Navy is a long and complicated one. The first navy in Texas was created by General Sam Houston in 1836. The navy was made up of volunteers from throughout the state, and it served as a source of support for Houston during his successful War for Independence campaign. After the war, Houston disbanded the navy and turned its resources towards building an army to fight Mexico. However, Houston was killed in 1837, and the navy lapsed into obscurity. In 1886, Alamo City began to build a new city hall on what is now known as State Highway 360. In order to accommodate the growing population, Alamo City purchased land east of Main Street and built a naval yard on that land. This new navyyard became operational in 1892 and included three vessels-the USS Constitution (1892), USS Monitor (1893), and USS Perry (1894). The almighty USS Constitution captained by Commodore John D’Alberto fought off Spanish ships at San Antonio de Bexar during the Mexican-American War in 1847. After World War II, Hawaii also acquired warships from Texas: two destroyers (#1901–1902) were delivered to Honolulu in 1945;[1] however they did not serve with any regular squadron until 1951 when they joined Destroyer Squadron 5 at Pearl Harbor.[2] These ships remain there today as part of Hawaiian Fleet's Museum fleet
