In 1846, the Alamo was taken by Mexican forces and used as a military base. The Battle of the Alamo began on April 6th when Texas Rangers, under the command of General Sam Houston, unsuccessfully attempted to capture or assassinate Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. On April 14th, Texan militia under Lt. Col. John Bierstadt repelled an attack by Mexican cavalry and infantry led by Santa Anna. After this victory, Houston ordered his men to leave the Alamo and march back to San Antonio in order to protect that city from Mexico's next attempt at conquest. The Alamo Coast Guard Station was founded in 1907 as the Texas Junior Coast Guard, and became the Alamo Coast Guard in 1912. The station's first duties were to man the outer harbor of Corpus Christi, which is now known as the "Harbor at Bay." In 1917, the coast guard began providing security for San Antonio's World Fair. In 1927, it became part of the newly created Texas Department of Public Safety and renamed itself the Alamo Coast Guard Auxiliary. On July 16, 1935, after years of debate and negotiation between state officials and local landowners, the state legislature passed a bill giving the coast guard permanent status within DPS. The name of DPS' new agency was changed to The Texas Rangers on November 1, 1935. In 1951, Coastal Guardsmen from DPS's 3rd Battalion responded to a request for help from Marine Corps units conducting anti-submarine warfare operations off Aransas Pass near Corpus Christi. This event is generally considered to be when DPS became an auxillary unit of Marines. As DPS grew more powerful under its new name, it started taking on additional law enforcement responsibilities such as arresting criminals and enforcing traffic laws. In 1984, when DPS absorbed all of Travis County Sheriff's Office's policing functions within its agency boundaries (along with other county services), Coastal Guardsmen served as Law Enforcement Commanders (LECs) until 1987 when they were redesignated Assistant Chief Police Officers (ACP). In 1995–1996gencywide training exercises were conducted at Lecompton Naval Air Station in Comanche County culminating in what is known as Blue Jay II; during this exercise LECs from various agencies simulated emergency response procedures through performing high speed chases/capes over water courses simulating boat interceptions or rescues along inland waterways

The Alamo was a Patriotoubt fortification and military post in San Antonio, Texas. It was built on the site of what is now the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. The fortifications were erected by General Sam Houston to protect his city from French forces who had threatened its sovereignty. Houston's defenders included 640 men under the command of Captain John B. Forbes, as well as artillery pieces and cannons from New Orleans and Louisiana. The walls of the fortifications reached 29 feet (8 m) high and were loopholed for rifle fire. On April 6, 1836, Mexican army general José Joaquín Morillo attacked the walls using infantry and cavalry units; however, only 20 men out of 400 killed or wounded him before he withdrew into Mexico City. A week later, on April 12th, General Houston ordered his remaining defenders to surrender without any shots being fired. Of those 640 soldiers only 30 survived the battle at Alamo.
